New research project on rejuvenating blood vessel cells has started
A new research project by Dr. Felipe Lüttmann, funded by the Walter Benjamin program of the DFG, explores how blood vessel cells age and whether they can be rejuvenated. Using an innovative approach called partial reprogramming, the study aims to restore cellular function and open new paths for preventing age-related diseases such as heart failure and cancer.
Recent scientific findings suggest that the aorta may act as a central “aging hub” within the body. As we grow older, the endothelial cells that line our blood vessels gradually lose their function. At the same time, they begin to release signals that can contribute to the development of serious conditions, including heart disease and the spread of cancer.
Felipe therefore started this two-years project in May. For him, it is important to understand how to safely rejuvenate blood vessel cells could open entirely new avenues for the prevention and treatment of age-related diseases, with far-reaching implications for public health and longevity.
We warmly congratulate Dr. Lüttmann on this outstanding achievement and look forward to the insights this promising research will bring.
