Seminars in Translational Science

Dr. Afsar Ali Mian from the Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan, will be our guest on November 2nd. His talk, “Druggable Gene Editing Tools for Treating β-Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease”, will offer insights into his research on genome editing, regenerative medicine, and innovative therapeutic approaches for hematological and inherited disorders.

Afsar Mian is Associate Professor and Group Leader at Aga Khan University’s Centre for Regenerative Medicine. Afsar’s research combines genome and prime editing, stem cell technologies, mRNA therapeutics, CAR T-cell therapy, and targeted drug delivery to develop new treatments. His contributions include the development of Vamotinib and Vodobatinib, which are targeted cancer drugs developed for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. Supported by funding from Wellcome Leap and the HEC/World Bank Grand Challenge Fund, he collaborates internationally to advance precision medicine and translate scientific discoveries into therapeutic solutions.
