ribonucleic acid (RNA)
RNA is a biomolecule that represents the intermediate step of gene expression: Genes stored in the nucleus of a cell are transcribed into RNA, which in turn is translated into functional proteins (see transcription and translation). In contrast to DNA, RNA can also be used to express proteins of interest in cells without stably transferring genetic information into cells (see transfection).
