PHD PROGRAM

TRON Doctoral Students

At TRON we believe in the creative power of gifted and enthusiastic people and in finding and fostering new talents. We offer exceptional opportunities for ambitious scientists to work in a dynamic international research environment to investigate innovative diagnostics and therapies for the treatment of cancer and other severe diseases with high medical need. In cooperation with the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and its Graduate School of Immunotherapy, TRON offers doctoral students an educational environment with cutting-edge technologies and world class scientific mentoring. Doctoral students at TRON work in interdisciplinary teams and are encouraged to independent thinking and problem-solving. They have the opportunity to work on innovative projects in tumor research, biomarker discovery and vaccine development.

Young scientists at TRON are an essential part of the team and are challenged to regularly present their data in-house as part of their professional development. They are also strongly encouraged to show their findings at national and international congresses and to publish their results in peer-reviewed international journals. In addition to the curriculum of the Johannes Gutenberg University, TRON supports doctoral students with dedicated seminars and workshops. All meetings are in English and emphasize analytical presentation skills.

At Journal Club all students examine methods and results of selected current and high-impact papers. The goal is to gain competency in presentation skills through the critical discussion of scientific literature and the presentation of scientific content.

Several times a year doctoral students are given the opportunity to present their data in front of their peers. Students are challenged to critically evaluate their work, to present and discuss their findings and to draw conclusions for future investigation.

Once a year, TRON doctoral students present their work to all members of the institute in a dedicated poster session. Interpretation and presentation of data and results prepare students for participation in international scientific meetings.

An annual overnight retreat for all doctoral students, centered on focused seminars, where students and advisors will work together in a casual atmosphere.

All doctoral students would like to express their gratitude to the sponsors of the TRON PhD Retreat 2017:

  • Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH
  • Carl Roth GmbH + Co. KG

TRON currently has 17 doctoral students doing research in the fields of RNA vaccination optimization, personalized anti-tumoral immunotherapy, protein engineering, tumor immunology, bioinformatics and systems biology, next generation sequencing, stem cells, adoptive T-cell therapy, biomarker characterization, pre-clinical tumor models, vial gene transfer and bi-specific antibodies. They work in interdisciplinary project teams, giving each student the opportunity to learn about areas and methods both within and beyond their own research focus.
