small hairpin RNA (shRNA)
A short RNA that generates tertiary structures in form of a hairpin. Its structure is similar to precursor molecules of miRNA. shRNA is used to switch off the expression of specific genes.

small interfering RNA (siRNA)
A short 20-25 nucleotide-long double stranded RNA. It functions in a similar fashion to miRNA and shRNA and can be used to switch off the expression of specific genes.
